Music and Family

For this blog, I decided to interview my mom. As I have said before, I do not come from a very musical family but still thought it would be interesting to hear about the music that my mom grew up around.

Before I get started with the interview, I wanted to share a little bit about my moms background. My mom's name is Elizabeth Outlaw. She is a hospice nurse, which means she is constantly driving and visiting her patients in their homes. She is originally from Louisiana, but constantly moved around as a kid. She has lived in Texas, Arkansas, Kansas, Maine, Georgia, Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana, and now South Carolina.

Me "Who was your favorite artist as a kid?"

Mom "My favorite artist was Alabama which is a band that sung Country music."

Me "What was your favorite genre/style of music when you were a kid?"

Mom "I am not sure that I really had a favorite genre/style. We did not listen to music much as kids, we were always playing outside."

Me  "What kind of music did your parents listen to?"

Mom "My parents mainly listened to country. I did enjoy listening to it and enjoy listening to it even more now."

Me "What kind of music did you listen to as a teenager?"

Mom "As a teenager I listened to Rock n roll."

Me "Did your friends listen to the same type of music that you did?"

Mom "Yes, we all listened Country and Rock n roll."

Me "Did you go to any live concerts? If so, what were they?"

Mom " Yes, I went to Cinderella which is a heavy metal/rock band."

Me "Did music artists influence the way people dressed and stuff?"

Mom "Yes, as a kid parachute pants were popular from the Michael Jackson era."

Me "What kind of technology did you use to listen to music? How has that changed over your lifetime?"

Mom "Growing up we listened to music through radio, cassette takes, and Walkman. Over my lifetime the radio has stayed they same, however cassette tapes and Walkman were replaced by CDs and then iPods and AirPods."

Me "Do you and dad have a special song?"

Mom "Yes, Everything I do I do for you by Bryan Adams."

Me "Do you listen to the same music as you did when you were younger?"

Mom "Occasionally, such as Rock n roll like Deaf Leopard and Bon Jovi."

Me "What do you think of today's popular music?"

Mom "I think that some of it is good as in the popular country songs today and some of it is bad such as rap songs. Not necessarily any specific song."

Me "Are there artists that you wish were still alive?"

Mom "Yes, I wish that Conway Twitty, George Jones, Keith Whitley, and Kenny Rodgers were still alive."

Me "Did moving around a lot influence the type of music you listened to?"

Mom "No, because music is generally based on what you like not your surroundings or places."

  1. It seems like our moms have a lot in common! We’re also not a very musical family but my mom referenced many of the same things during her interview that your mom mentioned. Specifically, she listened almost exclusively to rock ‘n’ roll and country, and she also cited Conway Twitty as one of the artists that she wished were still alive. It’s interesting that she didn’t listen to much music as a kid though!

  2. Julianne,

I thought it was interesting that your mom mentioned Walkmans because it was the first time I’d ever heard of them! I had to go and do a quick google search. I also love that you asked the question of “Do you and dad have a special song?” I think you’re the first person I’ve encountered who’s asked that question in some way, and it’s one I love because of how music can attach itself to our personal relationships.

    Thank you for sharing!

  3. I liked reading your blog because it had a lot of similarities to mine. My grandmother talked a lot about rock n roll, but she isn't the biggest fan of country music. She's especially liked disco! I found it interesting that your mom still enjoys similar music as her parents!
