My Musical Culture
Hi everyone! My name is Julianne Outlaw. I am a sophomore here at Converse University. I am from Camden, SC, which is a small town about two hours from Spartanburg, SC. I have never been the person that is very interested in music and instruments. I was the typical kid that played the recorder in music class just because it was for a grade. I also tried playing the guitar when I was younger, but that did not last very long. Although I am not a very musical person, I do like to listen to numerous genres of music depending on the mood I am in.
1) If you get the chance to know me on a more personal level, you will come to find out that I love country music. Country is my go to genre of music and my most favorite. I will listen to just about any country artist. One of my most favorite country songs right now would have to be "With You I Am" by Cody Johnson because it always puts me in a better mood when I am down.
2) A song that I connect to on a personal level would have to be "By Your Grace" by Cody Johnson because it is about the gospel and I have always been strong in my faith. When this song first came out I was going through a rough time in my life and was not as strong in my faith as I wanted to be. This song made me realize a lot and helped me grow closer to God.
3) A genre I do not really prefer would have to be heavy metal. I do not like this genre of music particularly because it is too loud. Heavy metal just does not resonate well with me because of the hard core instruments and loud screaming. I usually connect to songs by their lyrics, which I cannot do with heavy metal because to me it is hard to understand the lyrics. When thinking about the different genres I noticed that I have never really thought about how much goes into the different types of music such as beats, texture, timbre, etc.
Hello Julianne, I can relate to you that I also am not a musical person. I too played the recorder in class for a grade. Instead of trying the guitar when I was younger I tried the saxophone and that didn’t last long either haha.
ReplyDeleteJulianne, I enjoyed listening to your music. Growing up in SC, I also have an appreciation for country music, and I liked the first song you shared. Also, I can totally relate on not really loving heavy metal (I said the same thing on my blog). I think your point about connecting with the lyrics is right on, and something I hadn't really considered as to why I don't like it very much.
ReplyDeleteCountry music holds a special place in my heart as well! My mom loves it and that's what used to listen to in the car as a kid with her. I feel like country music is super easy to listen to because even if I have never heard the song before, it's like I always know the words! Cody Johnson is the best, love him! Also, yes, heavy metal is struggle for me too. I can appreciate it for short periods of time but then it gets to be too much and I can't focus.
ReplyDeleteHey, I am so grateful I read your blog, because I am definitely going to look more into Cody Johnsons music. I'm kinda into country, but I don't know a lot of different songs. I only know of the ones that are super popular, or if my sister makes me listen to her new favorite song. I also do not enjoy listening to heavy metal. Like you said, for me it is just too loud and too much screaming. I'm just not that type of person. Can't wait to see how your further blogs go!
ReplyDeleteHello Julianne. Wow we are more similar than i thought. Your music taste is driven by our current mood and vibe. Although our music is driven by mood, our genre typically stays the same. I think the area and the atmosphere someone grows up in can drive a person's pick in genre. I agree whenever you say that i would rather listen to songs that have meaningful lyrics. Thank you for sharing.
